Two special qualities are essential to survive the hard road to fame: talent and courage and BRIAN KENNEDY possesses both – in abundance.
His own musical journey started in his teens, when he took the quantum leap from his native Belfast to the tough streets of London’s music scene. It paid off. His talent was recognised by legendary Van Morrison, and Brian was soon aboard Van’s famous 1990s ‘Blues and Soul Revue’ tour, as featured lead singer, sharing the global stage with some of the all-time greats - Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, amongst many. He also accompanied Van on five major albums. The six-year tour proved a perfect international training ground and Brian emerged well-equipped to pursue his own stellar solo career.
Brian Kennedy is first and foremost a live performer. His own words tell it all: “Music is My Lifeblood”- and it shows. His website diary reflects a relentless schedule of touring over the past two decades – from Ireland and the UK, to Australia, forming a solid international fanbase. Year 2000, start of the new Millennium, found him in New York as lead singer in a specially commissioned version of Riverdance on Broadway, for which Bill Whelan wrote new songs especially for Brian. In 2003 he was warmly welcomed to Australia on the first of several national sell-out tours and in 2006 was in Athens, representing Ireland for the Eurovision Song Contest. More recently (2010) in New York, he joined Meryl Streep to sing ‘Raglan Road’, at a Liam Neeson fundraising event for the Lyric Theatre, Belfast
Over the same two-decade period, his global touring has included the annual Festival circuits: Celtic Connections, Glasgow; Glastonbury, UK, along with state and national festivals in Australia and New Zealand.
Brian’s qualities and talents don’t stop there. Born communicator, his boundless energy has carried him into other fields of the arts & entertainment. His abilities as a Radio/TV presenter are proven, exemplified in the successful TV series ‘On Song’(2003), covering traditional Irish songs, in which he was both presenter and performer, bringing together an impressive number of luminaries from music, theatre and the media.
Despite the intensity of his live performance schedule, he has steadily produced an output of a dozen or so mostly self-penned, chart-making albums. The first, ‘The Great War Of Words’ (1990), produced his hit single, ‘Captured’; ‘A Better Man’ (1996) went platinum at No.1; ‘Now That I Know What I Want’ (1999) also went platinum at No.1, whilst his latest 2010 release, ‘The Very Best of Brian Kennedy’, was chosen by Radio 2 as their ‘Album of the Week’. Music awards started arriving from the start: Irish Best Male Artist, Irish Best Male Album – culminating in the 2010 Ireland Meteor Lifetime Achievement Award for Music.
As if that wasn’t enough, Brian managed to weave into his phenomenal workload, two best selling novels: The Arrival of Fergal Flynn (2004) and Roman Song (2005), both critically acclaimed and both entering the Best Seller list. 2006 brought the award of an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters, from Ulster University for his contribution to the Arts. Added good news is a third book in the pipeline, together with another album.
Brian can currently be seen as one of four coaches on RTE TV’s hit new series - ‘The Voice of Ireland‘ (The Voice).
