Hailing from Dublin, TINY MAGNETIC PETS: Paula Gilmer, Sean Quinn & Eugene Somers named themselves after the collectable Japanese toys and describe themselves thus: “Kinda Krautrock-meets-Bowie-in-Berlin jamming with Stereolab/Massive Attack/Goldfrapp/Kraftwerk, sort of thing…”
Sharing a fascination for classic electronic albums of the late 70’s / early 80’s such as Bowie’s “Berlin Trilogy”, Gary Numan’s “Pleasure Principle”, Ultravox’s “Vienna”, La Düsseldorf’s eponymous debut & Kraftwerk’s “Computer World”, the band recorded their debut album ‘Return Of The Tiny Magnetic Pets’ which was released to unanimous critical acclaim.
In 2017 they brought their blend of pop-infused Germanic electronica to a wider audience with their 2nd album “Deluxe/Debris” after they embarked on a hugely successful 22 date tour of the UK and Ireland supporting synthpop legends Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. The band made many new fans and sold out the first pressing of the LP & CD.
In 2018, UK tour dates, a new single “Radio On” with Wolfgang Flür, plus the “very live” album “Pink/White - TMP Live In The UK” and an appearance at the Electronic Circus festival in Detmold in Germany alongside Tangerine Dream’s Thorsten Quaeschning, cemented their growing reputation.
The band have accrued strong industry support for their blend of electronic European pop: Ex-Visage member and founder of the Blitz club, Rusty Egan, has been an enthusiastic champion with a remix of their track ‘Control Me’. Another fan is Andy McCluskey from OMD who in 2016 recommended the band “for all lovers of distinctive electronic music”. After opening for NEU! legend Michael Rother at the Electri-City festival in Düsseldorf, they played a blistering show which led to them opening for ex-Kraftwerk member, Wolfgang Flür. That show was a defining moment for Tiny Magnetic Pets, leading to two collaborations with the technopop legend on “Deluxe/Debris”.
2019 has so far seen the release of a 3rd EP “The Politburo Disko”, a second headline tour of the UK and the completion of the 3rd album “The Point Of Collapse” which will be released later this year.
“I love the whole album but there were tracks that blew me away – so beautifully crafted, so emotional, such clever writing with perfect emotion so we offered them the whole UK tour…” - Andy McCluskey (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark)
“Working with Tiny Magnetic Pets was great fun for me. I like the Irish band very much, we are friends. Paula Gilmer’s voice reminds me of a young Debbie Harry. Wonderful music, I can only recommend: turn your radio on!” -Wolfgang Flür (ex-Kraftwerk)
“It’s The Velvet Underground meets Laurie Anderson but it all leads back to Kraftwerk” -Boy George.
Band set to release ‘Souvenir’ definitive singles collection later this year
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) continue their 40th anniversary celebrations with the announcement of a special world tour. Starting in October in Portugal, stretching through to February 2020 finishing in Paris, the band will be joined by both Martin Cooper and Stuart Kershaw.
Today’s announcement comes as part of another exciting installment of the band’s 40th anniversary celebrations which first saw the reissue of their first four classic albums on 180g vinyl, mastered at half speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road and housed in their original iconic die cut sleeves designed by the legendary Peter Saville.
“Electronic music is our language,” Andy McCluskey says. “It’s how we talk.” “We’re at our best when we’re in a room together, working,” Paul Humphreys adds. “That’s when the sparks and ideas happen. It’s the same now as it ever was.”
The band were formed in 1978 by teenage friends Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys. They quickly became electro-pioneers with a string of hit albums released throughout the 1980’s, eventually selling over 25 million singles and 15 million albums across their career to date, establishing them as electronic synthesiser pioneers and one of Britain’s best-loved pop groups.
Last year OMD also played two acclaimed concerts at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in October. Both shows sold out and featured orchestral arrangements of many of OMD’s biggest hits, with The Times’ four star review describing the arrangements as “working perfectly with the orchestra and demonstrating how uncompromising OMD have been“. It also went on to say that the band “rejected every rock’n’roll cliché going and made the Philharmonic Hall seem like their spiritual home.” The shows coincided with the anniversary of OMD’s first ever gig which took place at legendary Liverpool club Eric’s in October 1978.
The celebrations also spawned a must-read special 40th anniversary book which tells the story of OMD from the garage beginnings right through to the latest sell out tours. Featuring memories from band members, other musical artists that they have influenced, famous admirers and loyal fans.
As part of their world tour, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark will also join The B-52’s and Tom Tom Club for a run of US dates in the August & September. They are also set to release a definitive singles collection later this year.
